Cervical Cancer
Are you worried about cervical cancer?
Vaccination – Cervical Cancer – HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is the main cause (75%) of cervical cancer. This disease is the second leading cause of death in women aged below 35. HPV is a virus infection, which usually causes no symptoms. There is now a vaccine which is 99% effective against HPV.
Once girls become sexually active, they may be exposed to HPV, so ideally the vaccine should be given before they become sexually active. It can be given to girls from the age of 9 years, and requires a course of three vaccinations over a period of four months.
The HPV vaccine can be given to older women too, research shows that it can still be very effective.
The vaccine is available at The Globe Travel Health Centre, each dose costs £135.00. Please contact us for further information, or to book an appointment.
Cervical smear testing – Cervical smears, which detect the very earliest signs of changes in the cervix (before they turn into cancer) are now only available on the NHS for those women over the age of 25, yet women younger than this can and do develop cervical cancer. Also, smears are routinely carried out only every three years, whereas in the USA women are tested every year to give increased reassurance.
At The Globe Travel Health Centre we offer:
