Tularaemia has been discovered in Tasmania after two people contracted the disease after being scratched by sick possums. Tularaemia is well-known disease in North America and some parts of Europe and Asia, but has not previously been seen in the southern hemisphere. Any traveller who has been bitten or scratched by a wild animal should see a doctor for advice and treatment.
