Rotavirus
It is estimated that by the age of five, almost all babies and children will have had gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus. Children under the age of two years are most likely to catch this virus, which causes vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever. Small children can become rapidly dehydrated and require hospital admission. Rotavirus is highly contagious and can spread quickly through a family.
It is now possible to protect your baby against rotavirus infection with a vaccine. This is given in two doses, by mouth, so no painful needles. Babies can start a course at 6 weeks old, but the first dose must be given by the age of 20 weeks, and preferably before 16 weeks of age. There should be an interval of four weeks between doses, and the course must be completed by the age of 24 weeks.
The vaccine is now available at The Globe Travel Health Centre. Each dose costs £80.00. Please contact us for further information or to book an appointment.
